We are honored to welcome Landscape Architect, FASLA/Architect Everett Fly as our keynote speaker. Mr. Fly is a nationally recognized preservationist and the recipient of the National Humanities Medal, awarded by President Barack Obama in 2014 for his groundbreaking work preserving the integrity of African American historic sites. He will share insights from his decades of research and cultural landscape work, including his contributions to historic cemetery preservation in San Antonio and the 2022 designation of the Hockley-Clay Cemetery as a Cultural Heritage District.
We are also pleased to welcome City Archaeologist Matthew Elverson, who will present on the intersection of archaeology and historic cemeteries, with a focus on the Texas Antiquities Code, Texas Health & Safety Code, and Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. His talk will provide an overview of legal and procedural requirements related to unmarked graves, cemetery identification, and the protection of burial sites in both active and abandoned contexts.
